Residential Accommodation
Sutton Coldfield YMCA is set in its own grounds, close to the centre of the town. We provide a high standard of safe, well managed accommodation for young people aged 18-30 years, and a range of activities and off site activity centres.
We are able to offer residents their own private room and a range of shared facilities, including a well equiped kitchen, lounges with TV, video and a computer room with broadband internet connection, and a laundrette. Breakfast is also provided Monday to Friday.
Community Facilities - Room Hire
Our meeting rooms in Sutton Coldfield are an ideal venue for interest and activity groups, meetings, planning days and training events.
From the Annual Report 2009
The aim of the housing department is to offer low support, affordable quality housing for young people while maintaining a balanced community. We aim to provide rents at 25% lower than other housing, to encourage young people’s independence, self esteem and to promote young people’s emotional well- being. We believe that young people should have a safe place to live in the community and that the YMCA can offer this. We aim to keep a balanced community with a 1/3 working - 1/3 unemployed and 1/3 in education.
There has been 67 young people stay with us over this year and 14 of them became volunteer duty staff.
I have been encouraging a sense of community between the residents and have been working towards developing trusting relationships with the residents and am pleased that many of them feel comfortable in asking for advice and support.
This year we have supported many young people at times of need. One young person who was out of work and employment has secured a place at university and is hoping to go on to become a teacher. One young person has joined the army and another has gained full time employment through his voluntary work at the YMCA and has enrolled at university to work towards a JNC degree.
We have supported several people who have been brought up in foster care. This is the first step to living independently. Over the time spent at the YMCA they will be given minimum support with the view to becoming totally independent.
This year I was encouraged to see so many of our young people that live at the YMCA get involved with a worthwhile project call Operation Christmas Child. This project sends shoe boxes full of Christmas presents to the poorest children around the world. The young people gave up their free time to collect and check shoe boxes that were donated by the local community. At a time when young people get bad publicity by the press I feel they should be congratulated for the hard work and effort.
