Residential Accommodation

Sutton Coldfield YMCA is set in its own grounds, close to the centre of the town. We provide a high standard of safe, well managed accommodation for young people aged 18-30 years, and a range of activities and off site activity centres.

We are able to offer residents their own private room and a range of shared facilities, including a well equiped kitchen, lounges with TV, video and a computer room with broadband internet connection, and a laundrette. Breakfast is also provided Monday to Friday.

Community Facilities - Room Hire

Our meeting rooms in Sutton Coldfield are an ideal venue for interest and activity groups, meetings, planning days and training events.

Housing

The aim of the housing department is to offer low support, affordable quality housing for young people while maintaining a balanced community. We aim to provide rents at 25% lower than other housing, to encourage young people's independence, self esteem and to promote young people's emotional well- being. We believe that young people should have a safe place to live in the community and that the YMCA can offer this. We aim to keep a balanced community with a 1/3 working - 1/3 unemployed and 1/3 in education.

82 young people have stayed with us over this year. 11 residents became volunteer duty staff and 2 of our young people continued to volunteer on our holiday provision with 2 of them working towards NVQ in play work. Several of our young people who were unemployment have now gained full time work; several of them have secured places at college and one young person a place at Birmingham University.

We have supported 5 care leavers this year. This is the first step to living independently. Over the time spent at the YMCA they will be given support with the view to becoming totally independent.

Case Study

John moved into the YMCA at 18years old after being forced to leave his placement with foster carer's. He was not in education or work and his self esteem and confidence were very low. Since moving in, John started to become involved in voluntary opportunities within the YMCA. He quickly began his NVQ in play work is now considering a career in youth work. He has now secured employment and also mentors other young care leavers in his own time.
