SUTTON COLDFIELD YMCA - HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE BUILD A FUTURE

Café Y, Sutton Coldfield Library
Café Y (previously Youth Café) is now into its third year and continues to grow and progress. The project operates in Sutton Coldfield Library in Sutton Coldfield town centre and is aimed at engaging young people who have nothing to do after school or who are passing through Sutton on their way home from school or college. The sessions are now run three times a week with organised activities, general chill out and trips.
Programme consists of and provides:
- A rolling programme of 3 club sessions on average in term time only weeks. This totals 126 sessions per year in the club with a further 10 sessions of activities off site, which totals 136 with each session consisting of 3 hours which totals around 408 hours of face to face work
- Three youth workers and for the last 6 months we have had a volunteer who is doing their placement with us for her JNC in youth work. all staff provide young people with information, advice and guidance on various issues affecting young people
- A link between young people and youth centres and other youth facilities to help young people engage in more positive activities.
Direct Outcomes of project qualitative and quantative:
- Provided three sessions around alcohol including the risks and dangers of drinking to around 75 contacts with young people in Sutton Coldfield ranging from numbers for alcohol support groups/leaflets to workshops using beer goggles and quiz’s for example to highlight dangers.
- On average around we have had 50 contacts per week across over all the session which totals around 2,100 contacts per year
- 10 young people accessing drugs information, advice and guidance
- 5 young people accessing the C Card sexual health scheme that is run by ourselves
- 8 Young People making up an interview panel when recruiting for jobs involving other YMCA projects.
- 10 young people have been signed up as volunteers for various projects including holiday programme and Café Y, 2 of those with KKats the YMCAs youth group for young people with additional needs where they will be budding up with a disabled young people to carry out one on one personal care on a ski rip next year.
